Where Did December Go?

Wow, this month flew by! I hope every ones holidays were wonderful! I'm now trying to catch up both blogs. LOL With my neck hurting I've just not been up to sitting at the computer. I've not heard anything on my MRI, I will be calling tomorrow.

We had our last visit with our social worker for our 12 month post placement. Renee was very pleased to see how far Twink has come. I'm sad that we are now done working with her. It's been almost three years since I first called her. I was able to get a picture of Renee and Twink which will go in Twink's book.

We met up with some fellow AWAA families and had a great time. We met some great families and hopefully we will be able to meet up with this group monthly. We are starting to plan our first seminar for the spring. I must admit I am a wee bit nervous but excited.

The Count finished three more of his classes this semester. I think we are all glad that these classes are done. He has three classes left but one class per semester (we can handle that). I know it was pretty intense for him at times but he did great. I'm really proud of him.

Twink is doing great! She is now saying mommom and daddy. It's been almost a year since I've heard momma. It now comes out mommom. When Twink had her first seizure she lost those two beautiful words but they have returned. :) Her speech is really starting come along now. Don't get me wrong, it's still slow but it's much better than it's been!

Jewel, Dash and Spitfire are all doing well and loving the break from school. They had a great Christmas and are enjoying the new gifts. Twink loved Santa but Spitfire was her shy pouty self.

Playing Catch Up

Wow, this month has flew by! So in my last post I asked for scissors, I found some. LOL Let me add that Twink will begin a second round of casting on January 6th. I ended up cutting off Twink's cast due to the fact that her fingers were sticking out farther than they should and she was able to use them. She started to use her left hand only and was getting upset when she could not use the hand as a whole. The casting has done wonders in more ways than one. Twink is now playing center based instead of turning to her left to do everything. She is using her right hand a bit more for some things but definitely more than before the casting. Best of all it has helped her speech. Wondering how? Well this is how it was explained to me. She was forced to use the left side of her brain and that is where her speech center is. So not only is she benefiting from the casting for her arm but it has propelled her speech. She has started to babble MUCH more and she has found the words mommom and daddy again. Twink's speech therapist is very encouraged as are we. As for the neurosurgeon who said Twink would never talk, poopoo on him! She does have to work on forming some of her words but it will come. She is also doing VERY well with sign language and we will continue to work with her on that.

We saw a new neurologist this afternoon. For the first time in a year we have found out the extent of Twink's damage from her stroke. The doctor we saw today was great and actually took time to explain things. I can't believe that the neurosurgeon and the neurologist we saw did not explain anything to us. When he came in the room he told us that he was shocked that Twink looked so well after reading her chart. He asked what our concerns were and I had told him about the seizures. He looked at the CD I had of all the scans of Twink's MRI's and her MRA. He then started to explain that Twink's left temporal lobe is completely damaged. That was the first time we had heard this. I believe he also said a portion of her cerebellum but I was still trying to wrap my brain around what I had just heard.

We are starting her on anti-seizure medication. It is needed and will always be needed. The damage is so great and she will always be at risk for seizures. I feel good about the medication selection he made. I know people think she is too little to start medication at an early stage in her life but it really is a matter of life or death. I've already had to do rescue breathing for her once I'd prefer to not do it again.

Overall we are extremely blessed. The doctor's very pleased at how well Twink is doing. He said that he expected her to do very well. Only God can work the wonders in our daughter like He has. I stand in awe of all that she has overcome. I thank God for blessing our lives with her sweet and not so sweet little self.

Merry Christmas!

As you can see by my lack of posting I've been very busy with holiday events. I wanted to post and let you all know that we are still here and I will resume posting to both blogs after the holidays. I'm sorry that I've not visited your blog but I promise I will when things return to normal. The children are doing great and I'll have a long update after Christmas.

If you could do me a small favor I would be so grateful. Two years ago on 12/26 I herniated a disc in my neck plus two bulging discs. I had a two level fusion a little over a year ago. The other day I happened to look down at the floor and I felt the same thing happen that happened when I herniated the disc. The pain has been pretty intense. Great news is that the appliance they put in is fine, no problem there. I go to the neurosurgeon tomorrow and I really need an MRI. Please pray that I can get an MRI without any problems (comp) and that what ever the problem is that it is an easy fix. I'm thanking you all in advance. :)

I'm looking forward to watching my children and enjoying Christmas this year. Last year we had only been home from China for 5 1/2 days and we were so exhausted and overwhelmed. This year Lia now knows what a family is next year I hope she will understand who Jesus is. :)

Metcha Day One Year Later

One year ago today on December 10, 2007 our family was forever changed! It was a change for the good. It was the day we met our Twink. I'm not sure I can put into words what this past year has been like with Twink. So many emotions, highs and lows. I knew from the moment I saw her that she was a strong little girl in so many ways. It might have been the fight she put on to get away from me on Metcha Day or the fact that she was walking that day. I was floored by her strength and to this day I am in awe of her.

Looking back over the last year I've seen this child who could barely sit up, not eat solid food, looked and acted very autistic grow into a beautiful little girl. We were going to doctors every other week if not weekly for awhile. I probably could have taken things slower but then I don't think we would be as far as we are right now. We have been blessed to have such a great developmental doctor who helps line up different doctors and therapies.

Twink joined our family and since that beautiful day none of our lives have been the same. Her siblings look forward to coming home from school and seeing her. You should see her sweet face when they walk through the door. She gets very excited and lets out a squeel.

At times I get overwhelmed with emotions. What if we had turned down this beautiful child out of fear of the unknown? I mean a brain cyst is pretty heavy stuff. I'm so thankful to our Lord who pointed us in all the right directions and who gave us faith to accept her as our daughter. I also am thankful that it was not until we returned home that we found out that she had a stroke in utero which caused her to have cerebral palsy. When one hears CP generally they think the worst case. Not knowing really how or what CP was I'm not sure how things would have turned out. Knowing me, I'm sure I would have done a ton of research and been OK with it but I don't know. I just think things worked out the way they did because HE knew. Thank you Lord, we could not have done any of this without you!

This is the that I posted one year ago (a day Late)
December 11, 2007 (Day 5 and another summery of Day 4 from Cheri)

Wow, is all I can say. I sit here and watch this beautiful little girl sleep and she is just so precious! Yesterday was an amazing day! I thank God for answered prayers in so many ways! We walked into that civil affairs building with so much knowledge, thanks to so many friends on-line. We knew that Twink would not be thrilled to see us. When we walked in and saw her walking it was all I could do to keep from sobbing. I'm not sure how many of you reading know but Twink has an Arachnoid Brian Cyst that will need to be drained (surgery) when we return home. We were told she was not walking but knew that after the cyst was drained she may start. We planned on giving her the best home no matter what. We loved her from the beginning. Trust in the Lord! She does have weakness in her right arm but that too will come around after surgery with some physical therapy!

Twink reacted much like I had expected her to. She tried to push me away, threw herself backwards, hit me and pulled my hair. You could see how mad and confused she was. Her whole world was changing. Here she was in a room full of different looking people, speaking a totally different language who smelled different too. We were taking her from everything and everyone she's ever known. Imagine your two year old and how they might react if a stranger came and took them. When she cried you can hear how sad she is. It is so heart breaking.

She had two directors drive her to the Civil Affairs building in Kunming. What wonderful men they were. They were so excited and so grateful she now has a forever family. We have a physical address for her foster family so we can send pictures of her to them. I'm not sure if we can write to them or not but we'll see. They brought a gift for me to give to Twink for when she is older. It is a purse and their part of minority outfit. It is beautiful. They also returned the items we sent in Lia's care package. I'm not sure if she received them but they did take about 12 pictures or so. I think we are going to try and do the one hour photo place here so we can see what is on it.

Last night was very tough. She cried for a long time. I'm sure she is mourning all that she has lost. First her foster family now the orphanage, but things are getting better. The Count had some great bonding time with her last night. He had her laughing and giggling. Today has been really good until this evening. She loves to throw her self back. I can tell you my arms are pretty sore. We are not sure when she has a headache so I did give her Motrin. I also started her on her antibiotic because she was tugging at her ears pretty good. She is taking a "nap" right now. I think we'll have to do something about that! I would love it if she slept from now until morning. Yesterday she woke back up from her nap at 8pm just like the director said she would. She is sleeping a bit longer tonight. She hates the crib so I will probably take that down and split the bunk beds up.

We have some beautiful pictures of her from today! She loves her daddy! Some times he can't even leave the room or she gets really upset. She really has taken to both of us. She'll pick which one she wants when. We went to a Buhdist Temple today. It was beautiful! After that we went to a tea ceremony and tasted different tea. Some tea from this area, some tea from other parts of China. I LOVE tea. Even The Count liked some of the tea. Lunch was AMAZING!!! We went to Pizza Hut! Hahaha It tasted so good and just like it does at home.

I've been fighting migraines since we've been in China. They are starting to get pretty bad and I have all of my meds with me. One of my travel buddies Kathy is also having problems with them so if you could keep us in your prayers that would be great. Please keep the babies in your prayers for their adjustments to their new strange ;) parents.

I must add, Twink is much bigger than I expected her to be. She fits in to some of her 24 month clothes but they are big in the waist and a little long. The 18 months will probably fit great in the pants but not in the shirt. I think she may even have the same size foot as Spitfire. My guess on her weight is that she is between 28-30lbs. She is beautiful and we are so blessed to be her parents! China is such a beautiful country!

Tomorrow we will be going to the Stone Forest. It is suppose to be amazing! I can hardly wait. Well she is up so I must go!

Scissors Anyone?

Twink did not have therapy with her private OT last week due to our crazy schedule and for the fact they never gave us an appointment. I'm not really sure where I would have fit it into our crazy week so I am a bit relieved. I have tried to call twice this week to get her in but I have not received a phone call back and I'm rather frustrated. This cast is not working for the shear fact that her fingers are sticking out too far. I'll take a picture and show you just what I'm talking about. She can do just about anything she wants with it. She can pick up a book, a crayon, and so on. The only thing it is doing is making her angry that she can't hold on to some thing with her whole hand.

If I do not get a hold of some one today or tomorrow I am cutting the stinking thing off! She did great with the first casting but they really did a poor job with this one. :( This mommas patience is wearing thin.

On a positive note the casting has forced Twink to use the right side of her brain and her speech has picked up. She is babbling much more and the other night she busted out with the word owl. Why she can say owl and not momma is beyond me. Owl comes out as clear as day and I do have that one on video! :) Look for that video on the main blog. Sorry I've been so scares but last week and this week are busy weeks for us. I'll write more soon.

Frustrated!

Can the cast come off yet!?!? Ok, Twink's frustration level this week is at it's peak. Did I mention MY frustration level is at it's peak? The little one has figured out that she can use her casted fingers to do things that she couldn't the last two weeks. You see they didn't bring the cast down as far on her finger tips this last time so she is doing a wee bit more with her left hand.

She is still using her right hand which is awesome. Actually she is using both hands which is even better. That is actually the goal for this whole thing. I do believe that it may take another series of casting in the future but we will see. Twink's right thumb still gets tucked and I wonder if it's because she held it in that position for so long. We actually have some elastic tape to use that helps pull the thumb out instead of her big bulky splint.

The good thing, we should have the cast off for Christmas! We see her developmental doctor in two weeks. We will then see if she needs AFO's (special braces for her feet/legs). They PT wanted to give her a couple more months of actually walking. Twink as of LATE November has only been walking for ONE year. I'm sure she will need them as nothing has change and in her last report from her regular PT her muscles have actually become worse.

I learned a secret from someone somewhere along all of this. I keep a binder with all of Twink's medical recorders in them. All of her tests, her reports, and early intervention. It has become very helpful for having it all at my finger tips. She has so much going on and so many tests that it just easier to say well here is this and here is that. So that is my tip of the year! LOL

Off To China

Well this care package is anyway! ;) I used Ann at Red Threads this time. I can now say I have used the three major sites that offer their services for this type of communication for adoptive families. I must say I really love Ann! She is extremely friendly and super fast! I wanted to send an update to Twink's orphanage as our one year anniversary is coming up. She called Twink's orphanage and the nanny that answered said she remembered Twink. She asked how she was doing and was excited to know that there would be pictures coming! :) Twink's orphanage is not very large.

I pray that we receive a response. I have asked for her finding add. If they can not give me the original I have asked for a copy. Please pray that we will receive one or the other. Twink's orphanage has been very giving. When I sent her a care package while in China they took all sorts of pictures of her with everyone. I have pictures of nannies, directors, and most important her foster parents! So with that I am praying that we receive some kind of response.

Decorating

We have been Decorating for the holidays here at our house. One of the things we do every year is put a tree up above our front door every year. We place white lights and silver bulb ornaments on it. Then under the tree we place empty boxes that are wrapped in colorful paper. It add cheer to out foyer and also our landing upstairs.

The day we pulled all of items out to do this Spitfire placed a bow on Twink. Twink was loving it. Spitfire placed another on her and Twink puffed her chest out and went to show off her new items. I thought for $1.97 why not just place all of them on her and buy a new bag. She thought Spitfire was trying to take one off and backed up and shook her head NO. These are the pictures we took of her after we finished placing all the bows on her. Excuse the boxes, we had not wrapped them yet.

A Teenager!

Did I tell you we now how a teenager in our house? Yes, Jewel turned 13 recently! I can hardly believe it. Seems like yesterday she was a newborn and made trouble from the moment she came out! LOL No seriously, she is great! She is just growing up so fast before our eyes it is scary. She is a beautiful person inside and out.

I took her to the bowling alley for her birthday with a couple of her friends. Dad stayed home with the little ones and it was a good thing. I was amazed by the behavior of the people in the league that was finishing up. They were inebriated and rude. You see my daughter wanted a Dora cake but I could not find a Dora cake anywhere. You'd think a 13 year old would want something different but all of her friends are into Dora for whatever reason. So we bought her this really cute cake with a terra and a wand. Well Jewel thought she'd wear it out to the bowling ally. She drew some attention from one or two really drunk guys. Made me really uncomfortable but the girls thought it was funny. They knew that the guys looked ridiculous! We waited an hour for the league to finish and we were finally able to grab a lane. Good thing because I had had enough. They we suppose to be done at 8:30 not 9:30. The girls had fun but I will not let any of my kids go there again at night and def. not alone!

Update

Twink is doing fantastic! Her therapists are all amazed by how well she is doing. Yesterday we went for her outpatient therapy and they took her cast off. I was praying that they were going to put it back on because I still think it's too soon. You would have though someone was torchering her the way she was screaming! I had to go and check, that's when I saw them taking the cast off. After it was off she was whisked back to a "play room" for her therapy.

We were there for about 45 minutes maybe an hour. I was relieved to see her come around the corner sporting a brand new cast! :) Her therapist said she played for 30 minutes with just her right hand but then realized her left hand was "free". She told me that it is good and she is learning that she has two hands instead of one. We will go back next week but it will be a crazy week. We have our 12 month post placement visit with our social worker, two neurology appointments (one for Dash and one for me) and my monthly lunch I host for the ladies of our church. It should be interesting. Anyway, thought I'd share and I will have video soon.

White Thanksgiving!

Well the snow started falling Friday and this is what we woke up to on Saturday. Not a real lot but enough for the kids to play outside. Plus it was actually cold enough where it did not melt the minute the sun came out. This is the first year Spitfire has really enjoyed playing out in the snow. Last year she didn't mind it but this year she begs to go out. Only problem is her little face gets so chapped from the cold. After she is all bundled up she reminds me of the little boy in the movie The Christmas Story who could barely walk after getting all his snow clothes on! LOL Ok so she is not that bad but it is still cute to see her all bundled.

As I was taking these pictures the snow was still falling, big beautiful flakes. These are my favorite shots from that morning. We are suppose to receive snow on and off the rest of the week. Did I tell you I can't stand to drive when it is snowing?!?! I'd rather just be a shut in for 5 months. OK, so it doesn't snow here everyday but when it's not snowing it's cold! LOL I'm looking forward to spring or a above average warm winter. ;) A girl can hope can't she?

Creative Play

As I said in my last post it's cold here! I've had to try and think of things for the kids to do in the house that is different. Well Twink loves to play with the sensory table at school. Sometimes it has tried corn, beans, oatmeal or rice for the kids to play in. Well I decided to try the rice. I bought a big bin and a 20lb bag of rice and dumped it in. Bought a few measuring cups and tada a great new toy! Wellll, it gets every where. LOL As you can see it is big enough for BOTH Spitfire and Twink to sit and play in it. I have decided that when the rice is gone I will do beans. It will be easier to pick up. :)

Can you see Jewel getting in on the action? Oh yes, let's not forget that both Jewel and Dash like to play with the rice also. I ran to the store and left Jewel to babysit and when I returned I told them it was time to put the rice bin away. I started to vacuum and couldn't believe all rice I was picking up. I asked Spitfire why there was rice all over and she told me that her and Jewel had been throwing it. No lie I must have vacuumed up a pound to two. You would have thought that a 13yr old could refrain from throwing rice! LOL I guess it was too tempting.

In the bottom picture Spitfire was using glue and placing erasers on a note book. I have no idea why but this kept the two of them busy for an hour! Twink loves to glue but only watched this time. She did try to snag a couple of erasers though. I find it amazing that kids can be so creative. I think my creativity is all dried up! LOL

Take A Peak

Of course I have to place the sippy cup in her hand but the fact that she was able to hold it there until every drop was gone amazes me! She amazes me and gives me strength on days when I am feeling overwhelmed. Things are going so much better than we could have ever imagined. I hope to upload some video of her eating this weekend. Kind of where she was earlier in the week and where she is now. Now off I go to show off what this baby girl can do to her therapist who has not worked with her since the cast was put on. :D

So Far So Good

Things here are going very well so far. I would have to say the most challenging thing would be meal times. Twink wants to eat the minute the food is seen! Actually, I think the minute she smells it she starts to whine. :) She LOVES food. Twink starts off with the help of us bringing the spoon or fork to her mouth and she brings it up the rest of the way. She gets very frustrated if we do not keep "shoveling" the food in her mouth.
Bath time has been another issue. We can not get the cast wet at all. What I do is lay her on the counter while holding her head over the sink. That is the easiest way to wash her hair. As for washing her body, I stand her up in the sink and wash her from the waist down. She hates having her hair washed so she totally hates this new way of bath time!
We have had extra OT and the therapist is thrilled to see the movement in her hand. She is still have some trouble keeping her thumb out but we have some stretchy therapy "tape" that is helping keep it out. Over all, we are thrill with the progress. I can't wait to see where we are at in four weeks! :)

Burrr

Ok, I can't stand the cold weather! LOL Boy do we live in the wrong state. It is freezing here. We've had snow the last couple of days but nothing that really sticks long enough for the kids to play in. I must admit it is beautiful though. To see fresh snow after it has just fallen is as beautiful as the leaves changing in the fall.

We have been busy with doctor appointments and therapy for Twink. She is doing very well. Growing like crazy. She loves to play with Spitfire but it is not always a two way street. It depends on if Spitfire feels like Twink is more in the way or not. We are working on that. They are sweet to watch though. Twink now weighs 30lbs and is 36in. She is catching Spitfire fast. I don't think she'll ever catch Spitfire in weight (Twink has a super fast metabolism) but I do think she will pass her in height. We'll have to wait and see.

Jewel and Dash are doing really good also. Jewel went to her field hockey banquet last night so field hockey is officially done. She is thinking of doing basketball for her winter sport. Dash is doing bible quizzing again this year and I think will have a practice quiz after the new year. Other than that nothing much other than keeping up on school work.

I've had a lot of migraines this past month. More than the usual and will have to talk to my neurologist about it. I'm praying that it was just a fluke and won't mess with my medication. If they increase it I won't be able to think clearly and my blogs may be jumbled words. Maybe the blogs already are! LOL

Speechless

I stand in awe that Twink is doing as well as she is with her constraint therapy. The Lord is so good and I see him working with Twink!

Twink reacted much like we suspected she would at the doctors office. As you can see in the pictures in the post below she was angry. She did not want us restraining the arm and then when she could not get the cast off, OH MAN! She held her arm up in front of me and yelled. I imagined she was telling me that she did not like it and she wanted it off right now. That's when she proceeded to throw herself on the floor. I felt bad, but not as bad as some of the other things I've had to do. She finally let me pick her up and I looked at the OT as she is telling me instructions of how to cut it off it is just too much over the weekend. I looked her in the eye and told her that we she would be OK and that she will do well with it. I'm not sure she heard me through Twink's screams but I did hear her repeat that she will do well.

We left her office and Twink relaxed. When we returned home Twink was running around and playing with Spitfire like nothing even happened. Jewel yelled upstairs to tell me that she was signing with her right hand. Sure enough, she was. She was trying all sorts of different things that she had never done with it before.She was building block towers, opening doors (pull down handle) and pushing buttons.

Things have gone much easier than we could have ever imagined! We really thought she would have fought us longer but I am so relieved. She has been happy and playing like the cast is not even on. She is even trying to feed herself which is a bit hard but she is getting better at. I'm speechless with Twink's strength and determination. She is stronger than any child that I know and yet she has weakness on one side of her body. God has made her perfect in every way.

Thanks to all of you who have been praying for us. We have felt those prayers. I pray that Twink continues to stay as relaxed about the casting as she starts therapy's this week. I will post more pictures later in the week. I will also do a video update on Fridays. The video below is from Friday night just hours after the casting. Look at Twink go! :) Speechless

Day One Down

Only 29 more days to go! I'll let the pictures and video's speak for themselves and post more later tonight.

Tomorrow's The BIG Day

Please keep Twink in your prayers tomorrow as I will be bringing her in for the constraint (casting) therapy of her dominant left arm and hand. This will force her to use her non-dominant right arm and hand. We have tried a modified version at home and it did not go over well. Besides screaming, crying and full body thrashing I'm not sure how long I could have handled that if I could not have taken the "modified " version off after so long. I guess we will find out. Her appointment is at 1pm.

We are praising the Lord as we have seen great improvements in her right side where she had the botox injections. Twink was using BOTH arms to push around a doll stroller today and she actually opened her hand on the right arm to help push the stroller at one point! Let me just remind you, this is the hand that is usually in a fist. I know this therapy will be hard for all of us at first but it will benefit her SO much in the long run.

These are our pray requests

-That the casting goes without any problems
-Twink's frustration is short lived
-For The Count and I to have patients for a child who can tantrum like no other ;)
-That Twink gains some new skills of her arm and hand

I know it will take more than one casting but I know she will gain from this. Thank you all for your support. Do not be surprised if it is a day or two before you hear from us again.

Need Christmas Ideas?

Are you stumped as to what to get for Christmas for you children this year? Need some ideas? Well so did I . You see I didn't want just any toys, you know the kind the kids play with for a couple of days and then they are tossed to the side to collect dust. I want toys for Twink that would stimulate her in all areas she needs to strengthen. I Googled "Special Need Toys" and up popped this link for Toys R Us. It is actually under their category section and is labeled "Differently-Abled Kids." What a brilliant idea for a toy company to do this for parents who just want to improve their children's abilities. They break the toys down into categories (speech, fine & gross motor, auditory and more) which makes it very helpful for someone looking for something specifically for their child's delays OR maybe they need to be challenged.

These are regular toys that you can find at Toys R Us, Wal-Mart, or Target. Nothing special about them so their prices are not outrages. I know I have found some great gift for Twink and I can't wait to look for more. Here are a few that we have bought.


Thanks to a WONDERFUL speech therapist for recommending this toy. I actually bought one slightly different but the same concept. You can find CC here at her blog If Only I had Super Powers. She always has wonderful ideas!


Our SLP also recommended this toy. I figured it couldn't hurt and thought CC would approve! LOL The very last toy with the blocks that makes sounds was also something she suggested and something she has used in therapy.


These last two items are something I really would just wanted to buy for Twink. I think they will be great for her to work on.


Now there is a ton more that I could list that we would love to buy Twink but I don't want this post to get too long. I will be e-mailing a thank you to TRU for giving much thought to ALL children. I hope this is as much of a blessing to you as it was to us! :) Huge hats off to TRU!!

Special Needs

I'm not sure if any of you are thinking of switching to special needs but I came across a great list that informs you of different special needs. You can find it here and i do believe it covers a wide range of different SN. I know when I started looking at different SN for our medical check list I started looking up different items I didn't know about. It was a great way to learn if we would be able to handle a specific SN. If you have any questions you can always e-mail me. :)

Rejoicing

Twink has been getting Speech therapy for almost 8 months now. For the last three months she has been receiving it twice a week. I think it also helps that she is going to a "pre-school" two morning out of the week. She can some times repeat a word but never recalls a word on her own. Well The Count and I were sitting our bed and Twink walks up to the edge and starts whining. Nothing new, right? This is what the following minute sounded like.

M-"What?"
T-"WHAAAA"
M-"What do you want?"
T-"UP!"
M-"UP-YEAH"
mommy and daddy clapping hands and cheering wildly!

So now it seems Twink has mastered up and how to use it! :) We are so stinking proud. She works so hard most days. She cheers for herself after trying to say a new word. It's really quite cute.

As you all know Twink had her Botox injections last Monday. She did really great with them. It was interesting to see how many people they had in the room to hold down this little person. I must say they have been the most prepared group I've been to in ALL of my visits with different doctors. Twink had two injections in her bicep and one in her thumb (the fatty part). I think she was more upset that we were holding her down then the actual injections. I'm told they feel like an immunization. I was able to give her a topical numbing cream to help with the initial poke which seemed to help. I was told I would see some improvement in 3-5 days and max. improvement 7-14 days. We actually saw some improvement the next day. It wasn't in her hand or arm though, it was her mood! LOL She seems much more happy and loving since the injections. I'm sure it has nothing to do with it but it just seems funny.

We have started to see some big improvements in her arm. She does not keep it tucked in close to her and bent most of the day. She is now straightening and reaching for things. Her hand is slowly starting to open as well but I'm thinking we'll see the most improvement in the 14 day range. She tucks that thumb pretty tight. This coming Friday she will have a cast applied to her stronger arm (the left arm) in order teach her to use her weaker arm. She is going to be HIGHLY frustrated.

We have had her preschool eval. and learned that they would like her to receive speech therapy 4-5 times a week, physical therapy 3-4 times a week and I'm not sure about occupational therapy because they come on Tuesday. She is severely delayed in most areas (no big surprise) but she is making progress. :) She was scored on the two year scales but will be three in in two months. If they scored her with the three year old she would be grossly delayed. I'm not worried because I see the progress she is making and I truly believe she is going to make huge "Twink" gains. She does qualify for pre-school but I don't think they will have an opening until September. That means all of Twink's therapies will be done here at home except for the two she can receive at the school she goes to now. It's OK, there will be an end in site.


We are getting ready to do our 12 month post placement report and in doing so took some pictures this past weekend. Here is one of the three of us. We were actually able to get one of all of us that we are going to use for our Christmas cards but as usually our little squirm worm was trying to get down. At least we have one to send this year. Last year we were heading to China and then I thought (LOL) I'd do them when I returned from China. HA if only I knew how stinking tired we would have been. So I will be sending cards out! :)

Yo Gabba Gabba

Did you think I was speaking mumbled jargon? This is an actual kids show for those of you who don't know what it is. It is shown on Nick Jr. and Noggin. I'm not real sure what it is about this show but Twink is memorized by it. Sometimes they will do a 2 minute commercial and she will run to the T.V. and watch it intensely. I did not know it was a program at first. I came across it one night and almost died laughing. It reminds me of a 70's show for some reason.

I am not sure what it is but Twink will watch the whole show and not move. I am beginning to wonder if the producers put subliminal messages within the show! LOL She literally freezes in her tracks. It's almost as if she is in another world. Honestly I think it is the beat of the music and all the retro shapes they throw up on the screen. Anyway, she likes it and I just laugh every time she happens to catch it on. Anyone have kids amazed by this show?

Better Late Than Never

Here are some of our Halloween pictures. I thought I better post some because before I know it, it will be Thanksgiving! LOL We went with another couple and their children and they are below.

Dash went as a ninja this year. It's a good thing it was a warmer year because the child only wore his under clothes under this paper thin costume! YIKES!

I bet you can all guess who Spitfire is. Better yet I bet you all had one of these dolls growing up. I love this costume and will def. keep it for Twink. Only problem check out her reaction to her hood going on in the picture below.

Not sure Spitfire's costume will work for this little one. She still does not like things to cover her head unless it is her pillow at night. LOL I have a few more picture of her with tears just rolling off those cute cheeks. Oh well, maybe it will get better before she grows into it. I do have to add that once the hat came off she was happy as can be! :) Oh well, what are you going to do. It so was not worth the fight.

Landslide In Chuxiong

Please pray for the people in the city of Chuxiong Yunnan Province and surrounding areas. It seems there has been some heavy rain which has caused some mudslides. This is where Twink spent the first two years of her life. Her first family is there, her foster family is there as well as the orphanage staff and children. I have no idea how the foster family is or the orphanage. Hopefully I will here some thing more.

P.S. Twink's botox injections went well today. I also exchanged phone numbers with a mom in the waiting room of a little boy adopted from Korea who has CP and will be 3 yr. old next month! :)

I'm Parting From It

I'm going to part with the beautiful Tralala outfit that I bought almost one year ago with the two other mamma's from my travel group. Only problem, it did not arrive before we left for China. Oh, don't get me wrong, I did expedited shipping. What I should have done was just gone a head and did over night that way I knew I had it. It arrived six hours after we took off in our plane for China. My dear friend Carla talked how we could possible take Katie's , Audrey's and Lia's. Well Katie was very sick and obviously Twink's outfit never arrived in time so that never happened. Unfortunately I lost most of my pictures of Lia in her pretty outfit when out computer crashed. She is wearing it in the picture in the blog banner.

So I have decided to go ahead and sell it. I may have kept it if it had arrived on time and had special meaning but it really does not hold any meaning. She only wore it two maybe three times. I hope to put it on the big auction site sometime this weekend.

Hey, wish us luck Twink has her pre-school eval. in a little while. Oh and did I tell you her and I had our hair cut yesterday? She looks really cute and I really look umm, well let me work on it. I'll post picture soon.

After Many Months

We received and e-mail from Angela at Ladybugs and Love that Lia's foster mom had sent a letter in response to the one we sent in June. She also sent 3 pictures which Angela scanned so we could see right away! One was Twink stark naked looking like a Buddha baby. She had the biggest pot belly on her. The second was of her and her foster dad days before we arrived in China. I believe it was the day they had to bring her back to the orphanage but that is only a guess (date stamped picture). Last was a picture of her foster parents and her foster sister! We received more information on her and lets just say the two of them have a lot in common. She is still living with the foster family as of now. I know of no plans for her future. :(

It is always so exciting to receive these letters and pictures. It gives me a glimpse of what Twink was like when she was younger. I don't just look at Twink in the photo, I look at the big picture. I look at the couch, the blankets, any pictures, books, etc. I am getting ready to send her orphanage an update with pictures. I am going to ask for an item and I pray that they send it to us. I know it's there but I'm not sure how likely it will be for me to obtain it. Wish me luck and a pray wouldn't hurt.

Game, Birthday and a Box

Jewel just finished up her first year of field hockey. I must say it worked her like she has never been worked before. At first I didn't think she was going to stick with it. Our rules are once you start you must finish. She ended up loving it. Their team ended up being 1-1-8. It wasn't until their very last game at home did they win. It was a sweet victory for those girls on that team. Here are the pictures from that game.

This is my now 10 yr old son! I can hardly believe it! It does not seem possible but here he is trying to grow as tall as me. He does not like cake but likes cupcakes so that was his request. It makes no sense to me as they are the same thing but hey, it's his birthday and he can have whatever "cake" he wants. :)

It never ceases to amaze me what a box can do for an imagination of a child. These two played with this box for well over an hour and still like to play with it. There were a few little arguments but they were short lived. I did think Twink was going to go in head first at one point but she did not. They love to play together and here is my proof.
